English Cromwellian Lobster-Tail Burgonet Helmet - Circa 1630-1660

This 17th-century lobster-tail burgonet helmet, also known as a zischägge, was worn by English cavalry during the Cromwellian Civil Wars. Crafted around 1630-1660, the helmet features its original cheek pieces (with surviving leather), a riveted neck guard, and a ridged comb along the crown. Some pieces of the original strap are still riveted to the helmet and the nose guard is original!

These helmets were direct descendants of Ottoman styles and saw wide use among harquebusiers and officers in Parliamentary and Royalist forces alike. Burgonets of this kind were highly effective in mounted warfare, combining protection with flexibility. The lobster-tail neck guard was particularly useful against downward slashes from sabers, and the full coverage made it ideal for cavalry charges and skirmishes. Stand not included.
