The blade retains vivid bluing and brilliant gilded floral and martial motifs, suggesting aristocratic ownership and ceremonial or officer-grade use. Likely dating to the pre-Revolutionary period (circa 1760–1780), the sword may have accompanied a French officer serving in the American Revolutionary War, possibly under General Rochambeau or the Marquis de Lafayette.

Cuttoes were short hunting swords favored by the French nobility for both dress and practical use, and were often carried into battle by officers due to their agility and elegant form. This particularly robust and finely embellished example stands out for its craftsmanship, large size, and stylistic rarity—representing both martial function and refined personal status.
